Why I Started an L&D Passion Project Teaching People Open Source

Over the past 15 years, open-source software has quietly—and profoundly—shaped my career. As a VFX artist, educator, and now Director of Training and Development, I’ve used open-source tools to launch online learning platforms, streamline enterprise L&D systems, and teach global teams. These tools helped me build the foundation of my career—and now, I want to help others do the same. That’s why I started OpenAppGuide.com: to give back to the open-source community and empower others through clear, practical, learning-first training.

Empowering Through Learning

As someone who transitioned from a visual effects artist to a Director of Training and Development, I’ve seen first-hand the difference well-designed learning can make. And I've also seen how many amazing open-source tools fall short—not because they lack capability, but because they lack approachable, learner-centered documentation.

That’s where OpenAppGuide comes in.

This project is driven by a learning-first mindset. My goal is to bridge the gap between powerful open-source tools and the people eager to use them—without requiring a background in development. Through clear, hands-on training and practical use cases, I want to help people build confidence by building real things.

What You’ll Learn—and Why It Matters

At OpenAppGuide, I focus on practical, project-based training. Every course, tutorial, and walkthrough is designed to help learners launch something meaningful—like:

  • A self-hosted learning platform

  • A membership site or online store

  • A documentation system for internal teams

  • A community or outreach hub

  • A custom content streaming solution

These builds are drawn from the same tools and workflows I’ve used in production, training, and enterprise settings. And they’re designed to show you how to take control of your own tech stack, whether you're a freelancer, educator, nonprofit leader, or internal L&D pro.

Who This Is For

I created OpenAppGuide for learners who like to roll up their sleeves and solve problems creatively. Whether you're:

  • A freelancer who wants to launch a professional site or client portal

  • A small business owner looking to reduce dependency on third-party platforms

  • A training manager building scalable, internal systems

  • A course creator who wants full control of their LMS

  • Or a tech-savvy DIYer chasing a side project with real-world impact

I want to help those who fell stuck between “I can’t afford a developer” and “I don’t know where to start”.

Learning Values That Guide the Project

This project is as much about learning design as it is about technology. As an L&D professional, I’ve built OpenAppGuide around a few core principles:

  • Learning by doing: Every tutorial has a tangible outcome.

  • Clarity over complexity: I break things down into digestible steps—no gatekeeping, no fluff.

  • Learner autonomy: My goal isn’t to make you depend on me—it's to help you build lasting capability.

  • Transparency and trust: I only recommend tools I’ve personally used in real-world environments.

Building Real Skills for Real Impact

OpenAppGuide is my way of turning years of experience into a platform that helps others take control of their learning, their tools, and their outcomes. It’s about building smarter, leaner, and more independently—through the power of open source and well-designed education.

Thanks for your interest—and for being part of a growing community that believes in learning by building. I invite you to jump into OpenAppGuide, whether you’re launching your first project or leveling up your professional toolkit. I hope OpenAppGuide helps you take meaningful steps toward more freedom, flexibility, and confidence in your tools.
